I don't know if I'd call it lazy... in fact, I think Smith does nothing by try and make the best film he can because he is so extremely insecure. Inept might be a little more fitting for a guy of his ability.

I wish he would just get back to basics and make comedies about shit he knows. There's still an audience for it, I think, but he may be way beyond that point in both his career and personal life to come back around.

I pretty much hated ever second of Red State. It was a bummer too, because I really wanted to like it. I wanted to believe that Kevin Smith could turn that ship around and get sailing in the right direction. But no, I thought it was really, really awful.

I think that what you're calling ballsy I'm gonna call lazy. It's easy to write ten pages of monologue regurgitating Westboro Baptist Church talking points and letting Michael Parks carry a quarter of your movie on his charisma alone. Especially since the scene was neither informative, interesting or suspenseful. It was just boring. That's not good directing or brave, it's just lazy.

I think you will enjoy The Loved Ones; it was a pleasant surprise, and I think if it does get a proper release in the States, it should become a minor cult classic.

As for Many Lane, it does appear in my overly bulky honorable mentions. At the time I saw the film, and for some time afterwards, it had a good chance at making my list for best of the year but ultimately got bumped after seeing a few more films I liked better. And yes, Drive is fantastic, and Gosling is great in it. He plays the character with an awkward ruggedness not seen in many, if any, tough guy characters.

Hey, Mark! Sorry to hear you didn't like Meek's Cutoff, though I am not all that surprised as it is a film that seems to alienate a lot of viewers. And that ending doesn't help things! However, I do think you will love Drive, and I certainly would love to hear what you think about it when you get a chance to check it out!

So glad to hear The Loved Ones is good. I just bought it as a blind buy from amazon.uk. I'll move it to the top of my watch list.

I also recommend All the Boys Love Mandy Lane. It's not a perfect film, but I appreciate the different approach to an age-old horror staple. The acting is solid all around, and it's a pretty smart movie. Shame it hasn't been released in the US yet.

Just watched Drive over the weekend and loved it. Ryan Gosling is an absolute force. Most actors would have screwed up that performance in any myriad of ways. Gosling played it brilliantly, being distantly charmingly one moment and bare-knuckled scary the next. Fantastic movie, and while not for everyone, I think it can be respected by nearly anyone who likes movies in general.

Freaking hated Meek's Cutoff. I also followed it up with the latest Tempest feature that also sucked major hoses. I did finish watching Season 1 of Luther from BBC and I loved it! It made up for the other two Lame-O movies I tried to watch. I do have Driver in the queue so I hope your recommendations can fulfill me with that one.

I got the UK release, which is pretty cheap. Incidentally, someone on FB was saying that it should see a release in 2012 for sure, but if you would rather not wait, the UK version would be your best bet. Definitely check it out, though. I think you would dig it, fo sho!

It's not a must see. Meek's Cutoff I loved, but I find that a hard film to recommend because I know it's so slow and that aspect doesn't bode well with a lot of viewers. It's a lot of people walking with horses and carriages, but I am still curious as to what you would take from it.

This is a great list, sir, and only four of the movies you picked are in my top 30 - three of which are in my top ten!
