Dumpster Diving For Gold: VHS VLOG

Vlog. How fucking hip.

Here it is folks, my very first ever video blog. I've always wanted to do one of these things, so it was just a matter of time before it would finally happen. While the video is a little cringe inducing to watch (for me, at least), I'm happy with how it came out, especially since I did it on the spur of the moment, in one take, with no prep whatsoever.

It's nothing special, just me talking some nonsense about a few VHS tapes I recently picked-up in the bowels of the earth.

Hope you bitches dig it.

A few quick post-video thoughts:

I touch my face. A lot.

This is not a 16:9 aspect ratio.

When I say conservative/catholic area, I am referring to the fact that the area I live in doesn't exactly equal horror, cult and exploitation cinema findings, unfortunately. There's a lot of digging, to say the least.

My hands move more than my mouth.

I think I might swear a little too much?

I neglected to mention that I don't like Crimewave all that much.

That's it. Thanks for watching, and I hope to do a few more of these things here and there, with a little more preparation, of course.

  1. I bet you don't say "but um" as much as I do though!

    LOVE IT!

  2. THANKS! Just the other day I was wondering if you were planning on doing some more at Paracinema, but forgot to ask you. You should do another one soon!

  3. Awesome video, man!

Just curious, why was the video vertical instead of horizontal like it usually is?

I also have Demonoid on VHS. I dunno if you haven't seen it yet but...eh I'll let you find out. Of course you'll probably love it and I'll feel stupid.

  4. Thanks, man!

I was going to explain the video thing in the post but just didn't bother to! I actually used a Flip cam and turned it on its side so it wouldn't fall over, then had to rotate the video so it was right side up.

I was more or less playing around, but next time I might do it with my regular camera, or figure out a way to keep the flip held in place in the upright position.

I haven't seen Demonoid, but I'm sure it's terrible, which could mean I may enjoy it! The cover art is incredible, though!

  5. Great first VLOG, dude. I don't think I'd ever do one... if I did it would have to be scripted to keep me from saying "uh" or "um" a lot. I've been tempted to go VHS hunting but I doubt I'd find anything good here where I'm from. Also, I love ghetto DVD releases too. My favorite that I own is a copy of the movie Zipperface, which comes in a ghetto ass cardboard case.

Oh, and don't worry about the aspect ratio... vertical TVs are gonna be the next big thing, just you wait and see.

  6. Very nice :) Taking a lot of your recommendations. Let's see if I actually get to watching some of them.

    Do this more.

  7. Aaron: There's something charming about a cheap DVD release, isn't there?! You should totally do a video someday, and of you do, you totally have to wear the Zipperface mask! I know you have one!

Ashlee: I shall, and you should definitely check out The Stuff if you come across it. I think you would enjoy it!

CTK: Ha, next time I'm doing one in a thong!

  8. At the end of the day, all you have is a shitty copy of a movie, but I like to think of the ghetto releases as collector's items. I have a random copy of Fulci's HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, except it's spelled "CEMENTRY". You never know, it could be worth something one day.

P.S. I don't think the blogosphere is ready for Aaron in a zipperface mask.

  9. How crazy is it that VHS tapes are now archeological relics of a vanished age? That just blows my mind. Hell, when I look at the piss-poor DVD selection in Best Buy, it feels like that format is closing in on extinction too. But VHS...I still remember getting new releases ready to go out on the shelves every Tuesday at The Movie Shops and now that era of Mom & Pop video stores is history. Oh well. Great "Vlog" Matt - definitely do more!

  10. Thanks, Jeff! I think it's really sad to see retail DVD taking such a plunge, and while many would try and argue against this thought, Blu ray isn't going to be taking its place, either.

Prices just aren't reasonable enough, and with the strides technically that have been made with streaming movies, the home video format is going to continue to dwindle.

It bums me out to see all these video rental stores going out of business, as well as retailers, but hey, I can buy a used copy of most any movie off Amazon for a fraction of the price they charge. Then Netflix and Redbox makes renting from an over priced video store seem like madness. It's bittersweet.

As for VHS, it is crazy that a format I was still buying only 10-years ago is now considered ancient, but boy is it fun to look back on the time when VHS ruled. As dead as the format is, the popularity of VHS collecting is marginally strong and the format will certainly live on through the people that cherish it most. It's just crazy how fast shit has changed.

  11. I'm subscribing to you immediately.

But I do think you need to work on your sign-off.

    Here are my suggestions:

"May the force be with you"
always a welcomed sign off unless you'd prefer to say "Live long and prosper", depending on your affiliation of course.

    or how about
    "Where my bitches at?"

    or the classic
    "Chuck Norris-Out!"

  12. Ha ha, my greeting leaves much to be desired, too! "Hey there!"

I should try and come up with a good sign-off. I'm thinking a karate kick at the camera followed by the line, "it's been great kicking it with you!"

  13. That's awesome. I like the karate theme.
