The Horror Hangover

Welcome to The Horror Hangover! A "MAD" experiment I am putting on where every Sunday, you can stop by the very blog you are reading right now, to find out what good or bad genre/cult movies are playing - while you lay on the couch all afternoon - sweating out the alcohol and other toxins you may have ingested throughout your wild weekend! I think I may actually call this segment The Hangover (so don't steal it!) since I will not limit my film choices to just horror movies all the time. However, it is Chucktober, so I will stick to the horror highway for this wonderful month! I'm not sure exactly how this will work out every week, whether I will pick one film, or a handful of films that are playing on TV, maybe it just depends on the movies themselves. I do know that the movies will always be on in the afternoon, thus the name, The Horror Hangover and they will not be on pay channels so most people will have the access to watch the movies I post. All times are Eastern too!

For this first edition of The Horror Hangover, I have three films for you to check out if you are planning on loungin' on the couch all day, and aren't a football fan...

At 11:00 AM The Headless Horseman (2007) will be on SY FY. Directed by Anthony C. Ferrante, who is some one I know as the make up FX guy behind horror masterpieces like Wishmaster 2, The Dentist 2, and other such number 2's! It riffs on the Washington Irving story saying that it was not the real story, but this one is!! How scary! It's Sy Fy, so you're never exactly sure what you're getting...well, you are kinda sure that your getting shit I guess, but that's just details! I personally think it looks great, but that's just me...Mr Taste.

Next up - Disturbia (2007) is on TNT at 12:30 PM. You more than likely know this movie already as it was a somewhat popular film when it came out in theaters. I never saw it, though I always kinda wanted to, heard it was meh-to-okay. Shia Lapoop is the star, and the film is like Rear Window without Hitchcock. Nuff said.

If you are still on the fringe of tossing cookies, then the best is saved for later on in the afternoon as Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956) will be on Turner Classic Movies at 2:30 PM. If you can't figure out what the movie is about based off from the title, then watch Disturbia please. This would be my pick for best Sunday afternoon movie, then again it is the only one that I have seen, so I may be biased. It's a classic in the purest form, it's straight up black and white Science Fiction with Saucer FX by the great Ray Harryhausen! How can you go wrong?!

I guess you could essentially watch all three films with a little overlap from Horseman and Disturbia if you so choose. If you have any films that you know of, I will try and have these up after midnight on Saturdays, so feel free to leave a comment if you would like to share with the rest of us. Also, feedback is more than welcome...any ideas or criticisms would be very appreciated, so please feel free! Hope you have enjoyed this first edition of The Horror Hangover! See you next week!

  4. This is such a great idea - and perhaps my new favourite part of your blog. Alas, I also don't have cable. And for once am not hungover. But I still love this idea... Nice work, Matt. You mad genius, you.

  6. Damn! 3 outta 4 with no cable?! I'm gonna have to rethink my strategy! Thanks for the feedback guys, I thought it would be a good idea that could add some fun to the blog every week - and it kinda coincides with the crazy party that always starts on Friday!

  9. Dylan: Or it's good for poor people that are too lazy to do anything, and instead of saving, they pay for cable! Wait, that's me!

Loaf: I could say this about every aspect involving Halloween, but watching all of the Halloween programing is one of my favorite things to do during the Chucktober months!

  10. This is incredibly useful! I have DVR and need some reason to justify paying for it, so tell me which movies to record and I'll be happy.

  11. Yay! I hope it is helpful, Emily. I actually thought this afternoon..."Hey, this movie is on right now!" But alas, Patriots football and the last Red Sox regular season game kept me from watching...but at least I knew they were there if I needed them! I hope I can be your Sunday afternoon guide!

  12. This is a really good idea. Especially for my lazy weekends home.

You are certain to have a field day when Fear Fest comes back to AMC... didn't it used to be called Monsterfest?

  13. Thanks, Ashlee!

I think it was called Monsterfest before...not all that long ago even. AMC is probably the best basic cable movie channel - especially around Halloween. I think you are right...I will have a field day as the holiday creeps closer. I may regret this! (Not really) 90% of it will be Halloween sequels though!

  14. awesome idea!!!

I'm always hung over on sunday and will use these posts for future reference. usually i turn on the tv and whatever's on stays on until i have the strength to find the remote and then change the channel. yesterday i watched an infomercial for an hour about the Magic Bullet food processer.

i should have watched the Headless Horseman instead. Now i know.

  15. Infomercials are so captivating...especially the magic bullet! Love the old lady who is weary of the technology, only to be swayed by a delicious quesadilla made in only 30 seconds (excluding prep time)!

Hopefully I will be able to provide you with a nice choice of good and bad horror/genre shit to keep you from the temptation of compulsive infomercial buying! Thanks for the feedback, WIEC!

  16. Waaaah, I miss AMC - especially around Halloween time. Really starting to wish that I hadn't downgraded my cable!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Well, I do have AMC so I can't complain that much, but I just recently had a major cable downgrade recently too, so I feel your pain.

I now do not have the 8 or so Encore channels that came with digital cable and they always had some great movies on them. But the worst one is not having On-Demand which had a ton of great movie stuff, like FearNet, and other such good things.

But considering my cable/Internet bill went from $160 a month, to $60, I am not that bummed!

  18. I'm so glad I ran across your post today. I was just wondering how I would track down a list of all the horror on between now and Halloween. Thanks Matt!

  19. No problem, Robyn! If I had the time, I would do it for every day, but I have a feeling that Sundays alone will prove to be quite busy as Halloween grows near. Hope I can provide you with some good horror to watch during your recuperation time every Sunday afternoon!

  20. Agreed, a most excellent idea, Rufus would be proud!

Have seen Disturbia but I have been meaning to pick up Ferrante's followup to Boo for a while now, will try to get it up on the que for Oct--- CHUCKtober!

  21. Thanks, Carl S. Preston, Esquire!

Boo was another one I wanted to check out, and Headless looks pretty cool...not great, but fun at least. Perfect for a Halloween celebration during the month of CHUCKTOBER!

Oh...and don't forget to wind your watch!
